Why Does Your Vehicle Wander or Feel Unstable at Highway Speed?

A vehicle should feel predictable and controlled at highway speed. If it drifts across the lane, requires constant steering corrections, or feels unusually sensitive to wind and road conditions, something may be affecting its stability.

Because some suspension failures can affect vehicle control, looseness or damage should be addressed rather than compensated for with repeated steering corrections.

Road, Weather, and Loading Conditions

Not every movement indicates a mechanical defect. Deep pavement grooves can guide the tires and create a sensation known as tramlining. Crosswinds may move tall or lightweight vehicles, while standing water can reduce tire grip.

An unevenly distributed or unsecured load can also affect handling. Heavy cargo placed too far toward the rear may reduce steering response, while excessive weight can overload the tires and suspension.

However, normal road or wind conditions should not make a properly maintained vehicle feel consistently difficult to control.

When Should the Vehicle Be Inspected?

Arrange an inspection if the wandering is new, worsening, accompanied by vibration or noise, or present on different roads and in calm weather. The vehicle should not be driven at highway speed if the steering feels dangerously loose, a tire is damaged, or a wheel appears unstable.

Diagnosis may include checking tire condition and pressure, measuring alignment, and inspecting steering and suspension parts for looseness. Avoid assuming that an alignment alone will solve the problem.

Highway instability is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. Identifying its actual cause can improve steering response, protect the tires from premature wear, and help the vehicle remain predictable in changing road conditions.
